Haderslev(Hader's Inheritance) earned the nickname "The Most Danish Town" through the referendum in 1920 when alone among the towns in Northern Schleswig had an absolute Danish majority of votes. It's one of teh oldest settlements in the country and gained its first privileges in 1292. Until 1970 the town was the seat of the regional adminstraion of the only county stretching right across the Jutish Peninsula. The biggest catastrophy befell the town during the Torstensson War when the Swedes under the command of Wrangel captured, plundered and torched it. This treatment bereft the skyline of the two most characteristic buildings: Castle Hansborg and the Cathedral Tower. They have never been rebuilt and for centuries their sites remained unbuilt.
