The name of the town means "lump", but what that name refers to is uncertain. Køge moved down to the coast about 1000 AD., but the silting up of the estuary became a reoccuring problem, which rioght up until the 20th Century has prevented the town from becoming an important port. Fortunately the local trade was well enough to keep it among the medium-sized towns, and in the post-WWII period it has been drawn into the orbit of Copenhagen suburbian areas.
